Can you believe it’s only been a year since this? The thing with babies is that as soon as they are actually here, it seems like they were always here. A year really isn’t that long if you think about it. Anyway, I am thrilled that Mike and Amanda were here in Utah so we could all celebrate Lucy’s first birthday together. We met up at the Nicholas house last week for a barbeque in their backyard. This is the same backyard in which Mike and Amanda held their wedding reception almost 6 years ago (can you believe how little Claire was back then? and how little Amanda has changed?), and it is really lovely. Right now they have some gorgeous flowers blooming.
We planned to start the party around 5:30, but the birthday girl was asleep when we all first arrived, so we did some lounging and chatting.
Penny Lane was delighted to find an entertaining older cousin and followed Claire around everywhere she went.
Peter noticed me taking pictures of the girls, so he tried to get my attention with his silly face.
And then joined in on the fun.
When Uncle Mikey showed up, they knew they had someone to chase them around and play hide and seek.
Meanwhile, Mike grilled up some blue cheese burgers and Izzy fed Liam some of mom’s delicious baked beans.
Finally the baby of honor awoke. She wasn’t quite sure what to think of everyone at first.
But something I’ve learned about Lucy as I’ve gotten reacquainted with her this past week is that she quickly cheers up and loves to laugh. She was enjoying herself in no time. We all got to work eating and tried to keep the kids from pulling down the streamers.
Lucy practiced her walking. She’s not quite there yet, but she has taken a few steps and keeps trying.
Liam spilled some juice and got his clothes all wet. Luckily, we were able to put our decorative element to its practical purpose.

Finally it was time for some cake!
Lucy wasn’t quite sure what to do with the burning flame placed in front of her, but Peter and Penny were close by to help out.
She sure knew how to eat it, though.
